Dear Emmys Red Carpet...

You have to love the Emmys.

They’re just like television - one part genius and one part trainwreck.

Kudos to the Academy for awarding the genius that is Kate McKinnon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the cast of The People vs OJ Simpson - as great as their performances are on their respective shows, their speeches on the Emmy broadcast were even better. And to Matt Damon, thank you for bringing the hilarity to a totally awkward situation.

Which brings us to the trainwreck portion of the evening - the red carpet.

It pains me to classify the red carpet like this, like a bowl game, awards show red carpets are event television for me. But this year’s carpet was just so PAINFUL.

Sure there were some standouts - hello Sarah Paulson and Kerry Washington - but the rest of the carpet was just so meh that I’m already looking past it to next year’s Globes.

(Big shoutout to the men this year for holding it down - they all looked amazing).

My usual tv faves just didn’t wow this year, Sarah Hyland looked like she copied Emma Watson from a past Globes, Claire Danes rocked an amazing liquid gold couture gown but she was literally ORANGE, and Kristen Bell’s dress was pretty, but it was so huge and princessly, it is a silhouette that feels tired nowadays, just like the mermaid dress.

Even though the carpet wowed less than usual, there were some trends that did emerge - gold and silver metallics, vibrant bright yellow, and an almost ethereal goth full of black lace and trim - a trend that’s also in vogue for this upcoming fall/winter season.

Here’s a look at my Emmys best dressed - and here’s hoping that next year the carpet is just as amazing as the show is.

Cozy.

If there’s one word to describe how my day began today, cozy is the word I'd choose. One of the great luxuries of the fall season is open windows, the breeze and the air liven everything up and leave behind a freshness that scents can’t replicate. Left open overnight, the luxury of open windows increases, snuggling to keep warm under the covers while the cool surrounds you is  heaven. The tradeoff, of course, is a struggle to get out of bed, but it’s nothing that a warm cup of coffee can’t resolve. Plus knowing that cool night meant I could wear long sleeves outside without dying all day, it was plenty enough to pull me out of my cocoon.

It also helps that I had a seriously fabulous weekend. I crossed two items off of my fall bucket list (number 1 and 5), watched a soggy Ohio State game from the comfort of my home, cleaned out my closet to ready it for fall, got consumed by another tv series on Netflix, and explored my city on a gorgeous afternoon. (It was seriously gorgeous, check out my pics below).

And while I’m nervous that this five day week might drag on compared to the four days of last, I am excited to catch up with old co-workers one night this week and to plan some time just for me post-work another evening. This weekend promises to be another great one, with two of my favourties happening Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, Independents Day returns to Franklinton celebrating the best that local Columbus has to offer. I picked up a good portion of my fall jewelry at ID Fest’s marketplace last year (thank you GeoSupplyCo!), but ID Fest is more than just local shopping. This year’s beer list looks seriously awesome along with their music line-up, but my favourite part of ID is the people. Check it out if you’re in the area.

Sunday brings the start of awards season and my second favourite awards show, The Emmys! As a dedicated television watcher I’ve always loved the Emmys, tv is just so much more approachable than film nowadays (that doesn’t mean it’s less creative though). I’m looking forward the hashing and rehashing the awards show fashion and forthcoming trends, and laughing my ass off when the comedians hit the stage during the Variety Series segments (i’m looking at you Colbert and Oliver). The Emmy’s are appointment tv for me; you know where I’ll be this Sunday night.

What I'm looking forward to this fall

Alison Pegg

If this list is everything new that I want to do this autumn, then consider this list my greatest hits of sorts. Besides the coziness of winter, there's no other season I enjoy more than the fall one. Here are the things I'm looking forward to in the next couple months.

Open Windows and Colour Changes

This summer's weather was nothing short of brutal with super hot temps mixed with suffocating humidity. But all of that is forgiven once the temps start to cool and the season and leaves start to change. I love nothing more in September and October than snuggling under a blanket or into a sweatshirt while the chill of the autumn air blows through the house.

Fall Sports

You can debate this all you want, but there's no greater time in the sports world than the span between September and December. Here's to a deep playoff run for my beloved Blue Jays, a majestic campaign for my alma mater, Ohio State, a healthy receiver corps for the best QB in the pros, Aaron Rodgers, and a win the #WCH2016 for my homeland, Team Canada. My inner sports fan is FREAKING OUT at the plethora of options to come.

Oversize sweaters and Mini Skirts

When the air is brisk but not too cold, I know it's time for my uniform of fall, the sweater and mini. This time of year I can't wait to break out a new sweater or two and coupled with my warmer temp friendly minis, it's the perfect fall uniform. Throw in a cool pair of booties or a classic white sneaker and my look it set - a mix of summer and winter that's perfect for fall's temps.

The smells of the season

From tobacco to firewood, cloves to cedar, I can't get enough of the smells of fall this time of year. And while some might call blasphemy over my dislike of pumpkin (and it's spice), it's the smells of campfires and leaves that really set the mood for fall to me.

Oktoberfest Beer

This summer I said "yes way" to Rose frequently during the warmer months and now that the seasons are changing, this fall I'm ready to welcome craft beer back into my repertoire. It's a fact that there's no better beer season than Oktoberfest, the spicy ales with aromas of the season are killer, especially when the pumpkin is on the side. I've already picked up a 6-pack of this from Land-Grant with intentions to try many more of Columbus' seasonal brews.

Dark Nail Polish

Burgundy. Navy. Oxblood. Black. These are the colours that get me excited for fall makeup. With red reserved for the holidays, these moody dark hues are perfect for nails come fall, a mixture of preppy and punk and perfect with any look. I'll be looking to sport all of these sometime during the next couple months.

My Fall Bucket List

Fall in Clear Creek

Now that Labour Day weekend has come to close and September is here, I feel like I can finally get excited about fall. Cooler temps, warm tone colors and the best time of year for sports, fall is definitely one of my favourite times of year.

Before the season passes us by, here are a few things I'm hoping to cross off my Fall Bucket List before the days get shorter and the holidays arrive.

1. See Picasso at the Columbus Museum of Art. I'm thankful I looked up this exhibit this past weekend before it departs Columbus, September 11 is the last weekend for the museum's lauded exhibit. My tickets are secured for Sunday - I can't wait!

2. Grab a maple latte from Cafe Brioso. A cozy treat for a brisk fall day, Cafe Brioso's maple latte is the perfect cup of joe for the fall season. While I wait for the temps cool off I'll keep savouring my favorite Vietnamese iced coffee from Red Velvet Cafe, but rest assured that later this month I'll be making the switch to Brioso's comfort in a cup.

3. Fall colours at Clear Creek Metro Park. With the exception of a blanket of snow, I don't think there's any more beautiful time than when nature turns the trees in jewels. This year I want to immerse myself in the colours, making the trek to see them up close in all their glory.

4. Explore new flavours with fall cocktails. Over the long weekend I picked up a bottle of Sage, a speciality liquor from Art in the Age. I've been following them on Instagram for awhile and am eager to explore a sophisticated side of fall cocktails, trading in the sweetness of pumpkin and cider, for the savory and woody notes of this fall herb.

5. Cheer on Team Canada Hockey Live! Very rarely do I get a chance to cheer on my homeland in person here in Columbus, but for one night this fall I can wear my Team Canada gear in all it's glory. Sure it's an exhibition game, but if you know anything about us Canadians, we take our hockey VERY seriously.

6. Get lost in a new TV show. It's been awhile since I've had the luxury of dedicating an hour of my day to a new show, but this fall tv season I'm hoping to do just that. While I haven't yet decided on what show to try (this show and this show are on my radar), I'm looking forward to a cozy hour on the couch once a week to veg out and get lost in someone else's world.

The A List: 6.10.16

Alison Pegg

It’s officially my birthday weekend! Yup, my birthday is tomorrow, June 11. I’m not a blow-out birthday bash type anymore but I am looking forward to a cocktail or two, good food, and a small low-key celebration.

In the meantime, here’s a look at what I've been enjoying this week.

 This Week in Startups Podcast

I’m about 5 years or more late to the podcasting train, but after listening the Bill Simmon’s interview with Scott Harrison last week, my latest obsession is This Week in Startups, specifically the episode with Chris Sacca. It’s honest, sometimes to a fault, but Chris and Jason give a real look at the landscape of silicon valley, how to differentiate your product for investors and they basically cut through all of the bullshit. I especially loved that Chris shared that he won’t invest in groups that haven’t had crappy jobs, it’s his “entitlement test” for all new investments. I couldn’t agree with him more.

Columbus Arts Festival

It’s officially festival season in Columbus starting this weekend and it kicks off with one of my all-time favorites: Columbus Arts Festival. Set on the picturesque Scioto Mile, the fest is more spans the entire length of the downtown river walk. Columbus’ festivals have always been my source of jewelery in the past, and this year I'm looking forward to finding more great pieces, as well as listening to some great artists (and of course sampling the food). Want more info on Arts Fest? Check it out here. (image via)

UnReal Season 2

There’s currently a serious Bachelorette bracket competition happening in my office, it’s hilarious to hear my coworkers debate and defend their picks for Jo-Jo's final two. But I can’t really get into The Bachelorette anymore, it’s become such a fame-grab that you can see right through most of the contestants intentions. Which is why I love Lifetime’s UnReal so much. It’s a scripted show about the behind-the-scenes drama that happens on the fictional show Everlasting and the storylines are straight out of crazy town. I Love It - it’s so salacious and very very addicting.

Nuzzel

Ever have those days where you’re stuck in meetings and don’t have enough time to check your twitter feed but wish someone could tell you what you missed? You need Nuzzel. Chris Sacca (see above) mentioned this app in his TWiS episode and it’s fantastic. Not only do you get a daily digest via email of what you missed, but the app will display the links and topics you missed based on how many of your friends mentioned or tweeted about it. So no more FOMO worries for social media, Nuzzel has you covered.

Snapchat’s story redesign

Boy, is this list tech-heavy this week or what? You can tell where most of my energy has been spent lately (don’t worry wine, I didn't forget about you). It’s a little Vogue, a little Pinterest and a little Flipboard-esque, but I’m loving how the stories are more than just a logo, with full images and headlines teasing the stories behind the channel. Snapchat is on fire with their innovation as of late, word is their daily users have surpassed twitter, and I’m a huge huge fan of how they’re continuing to stay fresh and relevant. I can’t wait to see what they do next!
